2019 Summer Study Abroad Program

What is the political, cultural and economic meaning of the 38th parallel to Koreans living in the South and the North? How did it become such an impenetrable border when it was intended to be a temporary line back in 1945? How did the border affect Koreans before and after the Korean War? How did this division affect economic growth and how is the economic situation different in both countries? How do they differ in their culture? If reunification were to occur, do you think it would be possible for North Koreans to successfully integrate to the South Korean society?

The aim of the summer study abroad program is to invite students interested in studying Korea to visit various professional sites in South Korea. We will use the border as a lens into exploring four main themes: Korean identities, division, reunification, and economic difference between the two Koreas through readings, discussions, on-site lectures, and site visits. The program participants will trace the transnational processes of modernization, imperialism, colonization, the Cold War, decolonization, and neoliberalism that have shaped and continue to shape Korean identity and culture.

The Yonsei Journal of International Studies (YJIS) is a biannual interdisciplinary journal affiliated with the Center for International Studies and run by the Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies in Seoul, South Korea. The YJIS welcomes submissions from all scholars, especially graduate students and junior professors that fall within the diverse field of International Studies.
We are currently accepting submissions for the upcoming 2019 Spring/Summer issue.
The YJIS encompasses a wide scope of varying disciplines and methodologies, but each issue will attempt to be thematic. The YJIS is divided into three sections, in addition to an interview section managed by the editing staff.

The Planning Committee invites scholars wishing to conduct a collaborative research project and share its results to submit panel proposals to us. Those interested in organizing a panel should provide a 200-word description of the proposed topic along with a tentative list of potential contributors (not counted toward the 200-word limit). We would particularly like to encourage proposals that enhance opportunities for younger scholars to present their work. Once panel proposals are reviewed and accepted, the results will be announced in the Second Circular, to be distributed in April 2019. Once the panel topics are announced, interested parties should contact the panel organizer directly to inquire about participating.

The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) se complace en anunciar el "27th & 28th Summer Program for International Students". Como parte importante de nuestra misión es cultivar líderes jóvenes que puedan contribuir al desarrollo de los estudios coreanos, la academia ha organizado un programa intensivo de verano para estudiantes internacionales de pregrado en estudios coreanos. Este programa está compuesto de varios componentes, como conferencias especiales sobre Corea, curso intensivo del idioma coreano, viajes de estudio, excursiones y actividades culturales tradicionales. Desde su comienzo en 1993, hemos llevado a cabo el programa 26 veces y alrededor de 738 estudiantes de 45 países asistieron al programa.
Dado que ha aumentado el número de solicitantes, el evento se llevará a cabo dos veces al año a partir de 2019.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN 17TH AND/OR 18TH CENTURY EAST ASIAN HISTORY (KOREA), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

Applications are invited from outstanding candidates for a four-year postdoctoral position in 17th and/or 18th century Korean history as part of the European Research Council funded project (H2020-ERC CoG 758347), Aftermath of the East Asian War of 1592-1598, led by ICREA Professor Rebekah Clements and hosted by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The successful candidate must be willing to work on the environmental, economic, and/or demographic aftermath of the Imjin War in Korea (preferably focusing on the 17th and/or 18th century) and to develop independent research within the context of the Aftermath project. Applications are particularly welcome from researchers whose proposed work would be located within a regional context, borderlands, or who work on another East Asian country in addition to Korea. The main language of the project is English and candidates are not required to speak Spanish or Catalan. However, the successful candidate will be encouraged to acquire a basic competence in one of these languages during their tenure so as to be able to participate in locally organized events.

National Identities and the Youth in East Asia: 
Popular Culture, Political Mobilisation, and Digital Spaces
Workshop at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, 2-3 May 2019

As East Asian societies seek to come to term with demographic, economic, political and technological transitions in recent decades, the younger generation – the so-called Millennials born after 1980 –  have been both impacted by and assuming an increasingly active role in shaping these transformations. Despite being frequently depicted as a politically apathetic generation and with only limited access to traditional levers of state and cultural power, the youth in East Asia have been able to negotiate their political identities through a variety of channels outside official institutions such as popular culture, social and political activisms, and online communications. Digital spaces have become a particularly significant venue for the technologically sophisticated youth to engage in explicit or disguised forms of mobilisations and self-expressions as a strategy to, for instance, resist authoritarian control or to cope with social isolation. On the other hand, from the umbrella movement in Hong Kong and the sunflower movement in Taiwan to emerging feminist activisms in mainland China despite heightened oppressions, the youth are also increasingly involved in claiming the physical public space and in some cases utilising digital networks as a tool for real-world mobilisations.

The Society of East Asian Studies (SEAS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites paper and panel proposals for its 6th annual Graduate Student Symposium on East Asia on April 13, 2019, which will be held on campus at the University of Illinois. The theme for this year is “Lives Across Borders”. We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Sara Friedman, professor of Anthropology at Indiana University.

With the theme “Lives Across Borders”, this conference aspires to nurture interdisciplinary discussions about the past and present of East Asia, including Greater China, Japan, and Korea, as well as their diasporic communities outside of East Asia.

Studies Association Asia-Pacific Regional Conference 2019

The rise of populism and authoritarianism worldwide has caused friction to established orders and tested institutional strengths. In the Asia-Pacific the increasingly potent competition between major powers poses significant challenges to the stability and security of states and societies. The region has also witnessed the realignment and restructuring of middle powers’ alliances and foreign policies. The rising politicization of diaspora has affected domestic politics across the region. Competition in the South China Sea has the potential to fracture the status quo regionalism in Southeast Asia and create new coalitions and clubs of states. Climate change and disasters can make or break governments in the Asia-Pacific. Cyber-security has highlighted a new theatre of international security discourse.

Consciousness and Fundamental Reality: Lessons from East Asian Philosophy
June 11-13, 2019

The notion that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of reality, perhaps even reality's most fundamental aspect, is enjoying a considerable revival in contemporary analytic western philosophy, with renewed interest in panpsychism, idealism, quantum-based theories of consciousness, etc. In the philosophical traditions of East Asia, however, the ontological primacy of consciousness has been a central feature for millennia. In this conference we focus on the question what are the most valuable insights and lessons that this rich tradition of thought has to offer to contemporary theorizing on the relations between consciousness and fundamental reality. In particular, we will be interested in potentially valuable ideas which do not have clear equivalents in the philosophical tradition of the west, or which have not been properly attended to yet.

The Graduate Student Research Colloquium of the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania presents its third annual graduate student conference: Myth, Management, and Materiality in East Asia. This one-day conference provides a global forum for graduate students from U.S. and international institutions to explore concepts of myth, management, and/or materiality in East Asia (including, but not limited to: China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and Singapore). Students will explore these concepts within issues of literature, politics, culture, language, religion, and/or ideology.

We are pleased to announce that the triennial Joint East Asian Studies Conference (JEASC) will be held at the University of Edinburgh from 4 to 6 September 2019.

The JEASC is open to members of the British Association for Chinese Studies, the British Association for Japanese Studies, the British Association for Korean Studies and non-members alike. We welcome participants from all countries and backgrounds.

We invite panel and individual paper proposals from across the full range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences that address topics related to Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, other parts of the East Asia region, or the region as a whole. Preference will be given to panels with a focus on cross-regional and intra-regional issues. Panels are expected to reflect the diversity of our profession including, but not limited to, gender, ethnicity and career status. This will be taken into consideration during the selection process.

BECA PARA VIAJE DE INVESTIGACIÓN KOREAN COLLECTIONS CONSORTIUM OF NORTH AMERICAN




The Korean Collections Consortium of North America (KCCNA) is pleased to announce the KCCNA Research Travel Grants to assist Korean Studies students and scholars worldwide in their use of specialized library resources at the thirteen KCCNA member universities. Funded by generous grants from the Korea Foundation for three years from 2018-2020, this research travel grant program is open to anyone in the world except for those in Korea who already have access to extensive Korean resources. El pasado lunes 26 de noviembre se celebró la Jornada de “Realismo mágico en la literatura y en el cine” en la Biblioteca de Humanidades de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, organizada por el Profesor Farshad Zahedi del Departamento de Periodismo y Comunicación Audiovisual y miembro del grupo de investigación Televisión y Cine: Memoria, Representación e Industria (TECMERIN). Para tal ocasión se contó con diversas perspectivas desde las áreas de Humanidades y Comunicación para enfocar en profundidad el realismo mágico. 

CFP: "CONVEYING SHARED HISTORY IN DIVISION", BOOK



In January 2017 and in August 2018, Korea Verband hosted conferences on "Conveying Shared History in Division" and on "Polarization through Enemy Images" within Germany and Korea. The results of both sessions will now be published as an anthology in German and Korean, in order to document the results in the long term. The publication is expected to be published by June 2019. Along with the documentation, we would like to include diverse form of writings regarding the topic of the book. Interested parties are invited to submit proposals for additional individual contributions by 9 December 2018.
