CFP: "AFTER HOPE: FUTURE FORMS AND ALTERNATIVE METHODS", AAMSF

Symposium After Hope: Future Forms and Alternative Methods,
AAMSF, Sept. 25-27, 2020

After Hope seeks to engage critical explorations of hope as an aesthetic and embodied experience. The prompt to think “after” hope is intended as a way to consider hope’s complex relationship to the future and the past. Through presentations and workshops focused on cultural, material, and technological expressions of hope, this interdisciplinary symposium aims to explore hope as a dynamic index of change. To do so, it asks what it means to go after hope and what comes after hope.

Hope is an important historical, cultural, and social marker. Its significance for social action, however, is hotly debated. Often associated with general naiveté, or unrealizable utopian thought, hope can also be understood as a critical lens for understanding collective values and approaches to many of today's most pressing issues. It functions as an emotional register that underwrites, connects, divides and in other ways animates relationships between different communities, driving active processes of imagining, representing, and creating the conditions for desirable and eclectic futures. Through a discussion of hope in art, activism, and global alliances, we seek to understand expressions of optimism, pessimism, fear, and anticipation as part of cultural, material, and technological practices.

Queer Fire: Liberation and Abolition
GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies

Modes of imprisonment not only pervade historical and contemporary life but, more substantively, structure the grounds of sociality. Calls for justice, then, must have at their fundament abolition, and abolition must be understood as the complete obliteration of modes of imprisonment so as to create a world which would sustain life through forms of justice not conceived through violence. This would entail a radical reorientation to life and living. This reorientation must attend to gender, as gender is one of the chief forms of imprisonment—in the double sense that gender, it can be asserted, is a kind of prison; and the institutions of prisons have at their centers the regulatory (re)production of the gender binary.

The Personal and the Political in Contemporary North Korean Culture and Cinema

Call for papers:

We invite submissions of full-length essays on the important but largely understudied topic of “North Korean Culture and Cinema” for the September 2020 issue. The existing studies on North Korean cinema have mainly focused on the ideological role of the cinema as a propaganda tool of the state. Given the rapidly changing circumstances of North Korea under Kim Jong-un’s leadership and his ongoing attempts to reform and open the regime, however, we seek to illuminate North Korean cinema from a broader set of perspectives, including thematic, formal and technical approaches to the topic as well as its relationship with other artistic forms and emergent technologies. This special issue will feature articles from the following scholars, and we anticipate that many other scholars will be interested in taking part in this important unfolding scholarly debate:
