Northeast Asia in Regional Perspective
Asian Geographer Special Issue Call for Papers
Northeast Asia is a regional imaginary of limited capture among both academics and the general public. Ongoing tensions relating to island claims, sea rights, borderlands, population mobility, and resource access are rarely considered from a Northeast Asian regional perspective. More generally, the region's parameters are highly debated, with some conceptualizations restricted to Japan and Korea, while more expansive considerations include Russia, South Korea, North Korea, China, Japan, and Mongolia, or even a maritime borderland in the Asia-Pacific and an Arctic frontier to the north. In an effort to advance scholarly research on Northeast Asia, we are seeking articles for a special issue of Asian Geographer aimed at critically interrogating the region's political, economic, cultural, and environmental dynamics and conditions. Papers may approach the region as a whole or through specific case studies pertinent to relations within or between its composite states, subregions, and stakeholders.
The issue's editors are open to histories and geographies that invite deeper understandings of Northeast Asia's particularities. These approaches might include its unique history as an inter-imperial frontier, its role as an understudied European/Asian borderland, its function as source and destination of mass migrations, its dynamics as a cultural convergence zone, its setting of increasing invironmental fragility, and its context of geopolitical contestation. China's Belt and Road Initiative seeks to expand into this region, for instance, while Russia's "Pivot to Asia" indicates Moscow's increasing focus on its Siberian and Russian Far Eastern reaches. The editors of this special issue hope that scholars with broad-ranging thematic and/or geographic expertise will consider submitting papers that compel novel considerations of Northeast Asia.
Topics for articles in the special issue may include but are not limited to:
- Frontiers, borders, and buffers (historical and contemporary)
- Migrations (historical and contemporary)
- Flows and circulations of natural resources and capital
- Political and economic geographies of Northeast Asia
- Ethnographies of the everyday in Northeast Asian borderland contexts
- Inter-urban connectivity and the role of cities in Northeast Asian region-making
- The roles of states including, but not limited to, Russia, China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, or South Korea in the region
- Regional organizations and governance of Northeast Asia
- Climatic and environmental changes in Northeast Asia
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted by email to Alexander Diener (diener@ku.edu) by August 30th, 2019. The special issue editors Alexander Diener, Andrew Grant, and Mia Bennet will consider all abstracts and extend invitations to contribute a paper within two weeks of this date.
Papers should have a target maximun length of 8,000 words (including main text, abstract, references, tables, figure captions, etc.), prepared according to Asian Geographer's House Styles. First draft papers will be due (via Manuscript Central) by March 20th, 2020 after which they will undergo an editors' review. Authors will have opportunity to incorporate comments by the editors and submit final papers by April 15th, 2020 for submission to Asian Geographer for external peer review.
