CFP: 1ST ALL INDIA CONFERENCE OF EAST ASIAN STUDIES, THE INSTITUTE OF CHINESE STUDIES (ICS)


1st All India Conference of East Asian Studies



The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) is pleased to announce the 1st All India Conference of East Asian Studies (AICEAS)!

Since 2006, the ICS has held the All India Conference of China Studies (AICCS) in partnership with leading academic institutions across India. It brings together students, researchers, university faculty, practitioners and other individuals with an interest in China Studies to present and discuss their research in the field.

The principal objective of the All India Conference of East Asian Studies (AICEAS) is to foster interest in and strengthen research on East Asian Studies, primarily focusing on Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan. We also welcome papers related to Southeast Asia. The conference will be convened annually in collaboration with a leading Indian university/research organization across India.

The 1st AICEAS will be held in collaboration with the Department of International Relations & Governance Studies (IRGS), Shiv Nadar University (Delhi NCR) from 21-22 March 2022.

Please submit your abstracts in the following format:

Individual/Co-authored abstracts should mention the author’s name, institutional affiliation, email and postal address, together with the title of the abstract and a brief bio (single word document).

Dates : 21-22 March 2022

Deadlines
  • 30 November 2021 : Last date for receiving abstracts (250-300 words)
  • 07 December 2021 : Notification of shortlisted abstracts
  • 30 January 2022 : Last date for receiving full papers (5000-6000 words)
  • 20 February 2022 : Announcement of final papers

The best paper presented by a young & emerging scholar at AICEAS will be given the GP Deshpande Award with a prize money of Rs. 25,000/-. Selection will be made on the basis of methodology, argument and presentation. The selected paper will be published by ICS. Further relevant information will be posted in due course of time on the ICS website.

2022 AKS Hanmun (Classical Chinese) Fellowship



La Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) se complace en anunciar la "Beca AKS Hanmun (chino clásico)". Como una parte importante de nuestra misión es nutrir a los investigadores, que contribuirán al desarrollo y la globalización de los estudios coreanos, la academia ha organizado la "Beca AKS Hanmun (Chino Clásico) 2022" para académicos internacionales en estudios coreanos. Aquellos que estén interesados en los siguientes programas de la AKS, que es el centro global que comparte los estudios coreanos con el mundo, son muy bienvenidos a presentar su solicitud.


1. Programas: Conferencias, recitaciones, investigaciones y visitas in situ (realizadas en coreano)

4. Elegibilidad:
  • Estudiantes de grado, de máster y de doctorado que se especialicen en estudios coreanos en una universidad extranjera (incluidos los candidatos de máster o doctorado).
  • Los ciudadanos y graduados coreanos no son elegibles para este programa.
※ Se requieren conocimientos avanzados de coreano, ya que el programa se desarrollará en coreano.

※ Los solicitantes del curso avanzado deben haber completado un curso básico de Hanmun.


5. Documentos requeridos:

(1) Para todos los solicitantes:
  • Formulario de solicitud (descargar el archivo adjunto)
  • Certificado de inscripción (o de finalización)
  • Una carta de referencia

※ Escrito del asesor académico del solicitante sobre las razones por las que el solicitante necesita el conocimiento de los caracteres chinos.
  • Informe de resultados del Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) (si se ha realizado)

(2) Documentos adicionales para los solicitantes del Curso Avanzado (Elija uno):
  • Una copia del expediente académico o certificado que acredite que el solicitante ha realizado un curso de Hanmun en su universidad (o de otros programas)
  • Certificado de finalización de la beca AKS Hanmun
※ Todos los documentos deben estar escritos en coreano o inglés. Si no es así, deberá presentarse también la traducción del documento al coreano o al inglés.

8. Notificación de la aceptación: El resultado se anunciará individualmente por correo electrónico el 16 de diciembre de 2021.


9. Apoyo:
  • Billete de avión de ida y vuelta (clase económica) y ayuda para los gastos de manutención (un millón de KRW al mes)
  • Alojamiento (casa de huéspedes situada en el recinto de la Academia de Estudios Coreanos)

10. Otros:
  • Presentar un informe de estudio hasta quince días antes de la finalización del periodo de la beca.
  • No se concederán ayudas a los solicitantes que reciban fondos de otras fuentes.

Since 2008, the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies has held its annual Korean Studies Symposium. With only two concurrent sessions spread over two days, this event is a unique mid-sized, themed conference. This small-scale allows for both in-depth discussions of specialized topics and exchanges with specialists in many other areas of Korean studies.

Spying on East Asia: Intelligence and Surveillance in the Age of Information

October 31-November 1, 2020

This two-day conference will focus on secret agents and hidden control during hot, cold, and information wars in East Asia throughout the twentieth century to the present. Competition over information formed an invisible yet vitally important battlefield that had paramount effects on the war front in the first half of the twentieth century. Newly invented media technologies, such as radio, telegram, and tape recording, were mobilized to gather, reproduce, and disseminate intelligence. Secret agents and spies crossed institutional, regional, and national boundaries, destabilizing senses of truth and trust. The prevalence of the espionage genre in East Asia reflects the heightened political tension that persisted throughout the cold war, and also contributes to contemporary imaginations of wartime. Today, new technologies of surveillance and information control have largely reshaped people’s social experience and sense of security, raising pressing questions about power, privacy, and identity.

Bringing together scholars from various disciplines, this conference presents a collective effort to unveil the secrecy and significance of information circulation and control in changing historical contexts. How did hidden forms of control impact the trajectory of social history as well as everyday life? How is the secret world of espionage represented in popular culture? In what ways do new media technologies shape social relations and the production of identity? Topics contributors may wish to consider include:
  • Spy novels, films and TV dramas
  • Wartime and Cold War espionage trainings and activities
  • Disguised identity and the issue of collaboration
  • Media technology (radio, telegram, recording devices, computer, facial recognition, Artificial Intelligence, etc.) in information gathering and circulation
  • Surveillance and control
  • Security and privacy
Related creative approaches and inquires are welcome.


We invite scholars and Ph.D. students in the humanities and social sciences to attend the conference, to be held on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, October 31-November 1, 2020. Please email an abstract of no more than 300 words to Dr. Yuqian Yan (yyuqian@wustl.edu) by May 15, 2020. Graduate students should also submit a short curriculum vita (1-2 pages) to receive full consideration. Successful applicants will be notified before June 1, 2020, and will be asked to submit a completed draft of their papers by October 10, 2020 for pre-circulation purposes.

Local accommodations including food and lodging will be covered by the conference. We regret that we are unable to cover faculty participant’s travel costs. Graduate students will be reimbursed up to $300 to cover travel expenses.

The Bochum Yearbook of East Asian Studies (Bochumer Jahrbuch zur Ostasienforschung) is now accepting submissions in either English or German for edition 42, which is scheduled for publication in winter 2019‒20. All papers submitted will undergo double-blind peer review.

The Bochum Yearbook of East Asian Studies (BJOAF) has been published since 1978 by the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany. It serves as an international forum for academic publications on East Asian research, with individual research papers making up the larger part of the journal.
