CFP: "ASIAN TEXT, GLOBAL CONTEXT", THE CALA 2020 ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON ASIAN LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY

The CALA 2020; Asian Text, Global Context
The (annual) Conference on Asian Linguistic Anthropology 2020
February 5-8, 2020
Universiti Putra Malaysia. Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Themed Asian Text, Global Context, The CALA 2020 will represent over 300 years of East-West global interaction, communication, and transnationalism. Throughout, symbolisms of Asian ‘texts’ have been significantly emphasized, (re)interpreted, contested, and distorted, while employed for cultural and political purpose. Asian texts have become highly representational, authenticating, and legitimizing sociopolitical and cultural devices, and their potency should not be underestimated. Never have these texts shown more significance than in the present, as their intensified use, and their qualities in Asian identities long contested, seek this Linguistic Anthropological exploration.

CFP: "NORTH KOREA AND COMMUNICATION", ICA PRE-CONFERENCE 2019

North Korea and Communication
ICA Pre-Conference at Hilton Washington DC
May 24, 2019

North Korea has been an under-explored area in communication research. Limitations on movement and communication, as well as physical isolation of the country in the global arena, has made it difficult for scholars to produce meaningful research about North Korea. In recent years, however, there have been major developments in the communication infrastructure, with the introduction of cellular phones to the general public, resulting in over 70% of Pyongyang citizens having access. Foreign correspondents from the US, Europe and South Korea have been allowed to set up permanent foreign bureaus. In 2018, the North Korean leader has engaged in fast-paced diplomacy with the US, South Korea and China. Taken together, these changes are leading to a new era in communication about, within and around North Korea.

CFP: EAST ASIA IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE: TRANSNATIONAL MOVEMENT AND EXCHANGE IN THE AGE OF EMPIRE, C. 1850-1950

An International History Conference
The Education University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, S.A.R. China
(24-25 May 2019)
The conclusion of the so-called “unequal treaties” between Euro-American powers and East Asian states brought a growing number of foreigners to China, Korea and Japan. Treaty ports and foreign settlements such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Harbin, Jemulpo, Nagasaki, Kobe and Yokohama, as well as the British colony of Hong Kong and the German lease of Jiaozhou, developed into lively trading centres. The rise of Japanese imperialism in Korea and Taiwan added a further dimension from the late nineteenth century on. Competition, cooperation and conflict between different imperial and national projects found expression in multiple ways. This conference provides a forum to discuss the social, political and cultural implications of the Japanese and Euro-American colonial presence in East Asia from the mid-nineteenth century to the Second World War.
