CFP: ASIAN STUDIES GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE 2019

Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference
School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS)
April 11-12, 2019
Honolulu, HI

Keynote by Thongchai Winichakul:

We are pleased to invite graduate students in Asian Studies to submit paper proposals for Organized Panels, Roundtables, Individual Papers, and Performances for the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference that will take place on April 11-12, 2019 in Honolulu, HI. We are seeking submissions that will engage panelists and audiences in “provincializing Asia” by dismantling hegemonic political, cultural, and/or economic descriptions and practices associated with the region in a holistic manner.

Our conference aims to bridge methodological, theoretical, and epistemological divides within all areas of Asia and Asian Studies. We particularly encourage the submission of proposals that involve original research and incorporate interdisciplinary methods and frameworks that critically explore new and emerging trends and/or rethink existing methodologies and frameworks in Asian Studies. We invite a broad range of research interests on the region that may incorporate but are not limited to the following fields: Anthropology, Art and Art History, Languages and Literatures, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Geography, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Theater and Dance, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies.

Please send your proposals to gradconf@hawaii.edu by January 5, 2019 as an MS Word document with the subject line “Gradconf 2019” and indicate your institutional affiliation in your email. Presenters should be prepared to submit full papers no later than March 10, 2019.
