«El arte contemporáneo en Asia, en los siglos XX y XXI:

identidades en conflicto y cuestiones de género»


Este curso online se impartirá a lo largo de doce sesiones y los contenidos se anuncian en los títulos que se nombran a continuación. El objetivo consistirá en presentar al público algunos de los aspectos más relevantes del arte contemporáneo (de los siglos XX y XXI) de aquellos países del este y el sudeste asiático, que han conseguido transformar prácticas artísticas hegemónicas en una comprensión de la creación y la estética contemporáneas en base a su carácter experimental e innovador.

Por una parte, se abordará el conflicto entre tradición y modernidad (especialmente importante en ámbitos donde la modernidad se asimilaba a lo foráneo repercutiendo hostilmente en el ámbito identitario); por otra, se hará hincapié en el complejo papel de las mujeres en los diferentes panoramas artísticos de la región. A lo largo de las doce sesiones, realizaremos una inmersión en los aspectos más relevantes del arte contemporáneo de China, Japón, las dos Coreas, Tailandia, Indonesia y Vietnam, sin olvidar su relación con el resto del mundo, y en particular, de nuestro país.

International Politics in the Korean Peninsula

Explore the genesis, expansion, projection and challenges of

the Chinese World Order in China and East Asia.

About this course:

This course is divided into three parts. First, you’ll learn how the Chinese World Order emerged in the ancient world, focusing on the concept of the "heavenly mandate" (天命) as the ultimate source of political power (1 module). You’ll also learn how the Chinese World Order expanded into the relationship between China and surrounding political entities (1 module) and several challenges when the Qing (淸) Empire replaced the Ming (明) Empire.

Second, this course will review how China tried to project its world order into the relationship with Korea and Korea came to be integrated into the Chinese World Order from the 14th-century to the 18th-century (4 modules). More specifically, it will show how China intervened in the interstate trade and Korean music.

Finally, it will compare the two trajectories of political thoughts between Korea and Japan since the 17th-century. Korea fantasized itself as the genuine heir and center of the Chinese World Order, closing its door to foreigners. Meanwhile, Japan overcame the Chinese World Order and eventually converted itself as a modern state (1 module).

The working language is Korean with English subtitles.

Ha realizado estancias de investigación en el Instituto de Literatura Comparada y Sociología de la Universidad de Columbia, Nueva York. The Asia-Japan Research Institute of Ritsumeikan University was founded in December 2015 under the Ritsumeikan Asia-Japan Research Organization as the 12th permanent research institute at Ritsumeikan University.

In accordance with the Institute's mission, "Cultivating Asia-literate, globally-capable human resources and contributing to the development of a common vision for the future of Asia and Japan," we are pleased to announce the launching of its English-only e-journal, Journal of the Asia-Japan Research Institute of Ritsumeikan University. AJI Journal, Vol.1, 2019 was released in July 2019 in a PDF format online.

Vol. 2 will be released in September 2021.

Now, the Institute invites the submission of original research contributions in all disciplinary and multi-disciplinary fields relating to Asia and/or Japan for the 3rd volume. The Institute encourages not only solid disciplinary researches but also strongly promotes interdisciplinary research through the development and fusion of various fields such as the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. They welcome all valuable and innovative papers on historical, contemporary, and futuristic issues of Asia and/or Japan.

The Northeast Asian History Foundation continues to expand its interaction with scholars specializing in Asian history and related fields outside East Asia. The Foundation is also strengthening its ties with leading institutions and scholars by encouraging interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to research on geopolitical, cultural, educational, and other issues in East Asia.

The Foundation publishes the Journal of Northeast Asian History (JNAH), a peer-reviewed semi-annual English-language journal that focuses on history-based approaches to Asian politics, cultures, economy, and other fields to shed light on the historical realities of the Asian World. The Journal's geographical scope extends to other parts of the world that have significant relevance to Asian history, thus charting globalism and localism from global perspectives.

The Journal of Northeast Asian History calls for the submission of outstanding and unpublished papers for review and possible publication in 2020. The Foundation invites colleagues to consider the Journal when seeking to publish ongoing research since they believe this can be an impetus for further scholarly collaboration in the future. The Palgrave Handbook of the Catholic Church in East Asia: China, Korea, and Japan, Editors: Cindy Yik-yi Chu (Professor, Hong Kong Baptist University) and Beatrice Leung (Former Research Professor, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Kaohsiung).

This three-section Handbook provides information on the Catholic Church in East Asia—China mainland, Mongolia, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan—from its beginnings to the present. It aims to offer sufficient material and analysis for the study and research of the East Asian Catholic Church. It follows a chronological framework tracing events from the 7th-century to the 21st-century.

Exploring Landscape of K-Culture and Changes in Society: Past, Present, and Future

From K-Pop, K-dramas, and K-films to political activism, K-culture is no longer limited to entertainment. Recently, the power of K-Pop fans and social media has impacted the political scene in the US. With this in mind, the past, present, and future of K-culture and its influence in society will be discussed at the 2021 IKSU Annual International Conference. The main aims of the conference are to provide a venue to explore the landscape of K-Culture and its influence in society and to publish an edited volume.

Papers from various disciplines are invited. Ph.D. candidate participation is also encouraged.

While the first day of the conference will be held at the main campus of the University of Central Lancashire, which is located in the north of England, the second day of the event will be held at the Samlesbury Hall (14th-century manor house and gardens), one of the stunning stately homes of Lancashire.

As the plan is to publish papers as an edited volume, previously published work will not be accepted.


Financial Support for Presenters:

Travel costs will be reimbursed up to GBP 300 for flights from EU countries, GBP 100 for trains within the UK, and GBP 1,000 for flights from the rest of the world. Up to three nights’ accommodation will be provided for presenters, depending on the flight schedule. It is expected that presenters also participate as discussants at the conference.

In the case that the current COVID-19 situation persists until the conference dates, the event will be held online. In this case, there will be no financial support for travel, but an honorarium for publication will be provided for the chapter authors of the edited volume. Also, venues are subject to change in the case of a local lockdown.

The Journal of Indian and Asian Studies (JIAS) invites scholars, researchers, and academics from all over the world to submit their unpublished, original work of research articles and book reviews for publication in its January 2021 issue. The journal is an academic, biannual, open-access, double-blind, peer-reviewed international journal, published jointly by the Institute of Indian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (South Korea) and the World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd. (Singapore).

JIAS aims to promote theoretically and empirically rich interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies that contribute to the understanding of issues in India and Asia at local, national, and international levels. In particular, the journal encourages studies that integrate ‘theories of transition’ from the broad spectrum of social sciences and humanities. Besides, the journal is committed to providing a much-needed platform to promote studies that add new perspectives on Indian and Asian studies beyond the usual circuits of European and North-American scholarship. JIAS warmly invites all interested young, early-career researchers, including graduate students to submit their manuscripts.

The journal, in its special section, also invites non-English articles, translated into English, which may have already been published in other academic journals. Such types of articles, however, must meet the aims and scope of the journal.

Notice: All manuscripts must be prepared according to the ‘Submission Guidelines’ which can be found on the Journal website. Only those articles that are recommended by the reviewers will be published in the journal.

CFP: 12TH INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION OF ASIA SCHOLARS (ICAS 12)

Kyoto, 24-27 August 2021


We would like to invite you to submit a proposal for the 12th International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS 12). The International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is a global platform enabling individuals and institutions from all over the world to come together to exchange views on a variety of issues pertaining to Asia. The Convention attracts participants from around 75 countries to engage in global dialogues on Asia that transcend boundaries between academic disciplines and geographic areas.

ICAS 12 will take place from 24-27 August 2021. The meeting place for the twelfth edition of ICAS is Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto is famous for its world heritage sites, temples, gardens, palaces and craft centres. Kyoto Seika University (SEIKA) will be the main host of ICAS 12; it will partner with the city, Kyoto Prefecture, The Consortium of Universities in Kyoto, and the city’s museums and craft centres.

Events will include: panels and roundtable discussions, craft exhibitions, an Asian film festival and the ICAS Asian Studies Book Fair. With all these activities ICAS contributes to the decentring of Asian Studies while convening a global space in which Asia scholars and social and cultural actors from the whole world can directly interact. Participate at ICAS 12 and enjoy the multitude of networking opportunities, possibilities to share your research and to meet with publishers.

The main venue for ICAS 12 will be the iconic modernist Kyoto International Conference Center, set in a beautiful garden. Around 2000 Asia specialists and representatives of civil society are expected to attend.

Call for proposals – deadline: 1 October 2020

The submission deadline for proposals of Individual Abstracts, Panels, Roundtables, Book Presentations and PhD Dissertation Presentations is 1 October 2020. This year we are also calling for documentary submissions and welcome you to share your ideas that can positively impact the future of Asian Studies. The special focus of ICAS 12 is Crafting a Global Future, but proposals for ICAS 12 may involve topics from all Asian Studies disciplines in the broadest possible sense. Topics may include, among others: Arts; Economy, Development and Urbanization; Education and Knowledge; Environment and Climate Change; Gender and Diversity; Heritage and Culture; History; Language and Literature; Media and Digital Age; Migration and Diasporas; Politics and International Relations; Philosophy, Religions and Beliefs; Society and Identity.

Please note that all abstracts and presentations should be in English and can only be submitted through the online submission system. For the ICAS 12 Books and Dissertations Presentation Carousel, we also strongly encourage authors of non-English titles to present (in English) their publications at the ICAS 12. Participants will be notified before 31 December 2020 about the selection results.

Participants of ICAS 12 are expected to fund their own registration fee, travel and accommodation. Limited financial support is available for selected PhD students and early career scholars (PhD degree obtained after 1 January 2018). The grant application process will only start after the review process. ICAS Book and Dissertation Prize 2021

The ICAS Book Prize (IBP) was established by ICAS in 2003. The IBP is awarded for outstanding publications in the field of Asian Studies. It has created an international focus for publications on Asia which has increased their visibility and recognition worldwide. The IBP received 750 submissions in 2019 and has grown into the leading book prize in the field of Asian Studies. For this ninth edition, books in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish will be eligible.

For the English language edition of the IBP 2021 we also welcome dissertations on Asia in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences.
