Back from the Future: 

Critical Essays on Modern Monsters in Historical Narratives

Modern interpretations of classic stories are nothing new and each age creates its own monsters that it will automatically equate with like versions from the past—see the evolving versions on screen of Mr. Hyde and the Wolf Man for example.

In recent texts though, this placement of strikingly contemporary versions of monsters in historical texts has been used in ways that suggest more than just a simple act of “updating” is going on and that they are more purposely commenting on both our times and uses of the past and how that might impact on current political debates around nationalism, ethnic and sexual identity, and ideological and religious extremism.

Areas of interest within this can include more recent visions of classic monsters transposed back into historical settings. This can include narratives around mythological figures (Clash/Wrath of the Titans and 300), modern versions of vampires, werewolves, witches, devils and traditional folkloric characters placed in historical narratives (Van Helsing, Extraordinary Gentlemen, Outlander, Salem, Supernatural, Lucifer), or new creations such as zombies, aliens, and robots placed in periods in which they never existed (Dr Who, Kingdom, Stargate, Pride, Prejudice and Zombies).

La Consejería de Educación de España en China, en colaboración con el Aula Cervantes en Seúl, organiza este seminario gracias a la participación de dos expertos de máximo nivel en la educación de contenidos transmedia, la profesora Marcela Fritler y el Dr. Carlos Scolari, y a la asistencia técnica Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y su incubadora Xiji.

Introducción a los proyectos transmedia en la clase de ELE de Corea del Sur es una propuesta didáctica dirigida especialmente para todo el profesorado de español como lengua extranjera que trabaja en la región o tiene contacto habitual con este tipo de alumnado. La propuesta persigue describir la experiencia de crear proyectos de narrativa transmedia en la clase de ELE con el objetivo de desarrollar las competencias sociolingüísticas mediante el ecosistema de comunicación que las tecnologías generan.

Genders and Sexualities in Asian Cinemas

The circulation, commodification, and repression of discourses on genders and sexualities within and among Asian countries has been a constant feature of regimes of modernization, from colonial through neocolonial and postcolonial periods. Aptly enough, it is mainly through the modern vehicle of cinema where these discourses play out. Kritika Kultura will be initiating a forum on the filmic representations of issues on genders and sexualities in the Southeast Asian region, in line with its commitment to the pursuit and development of cultural and media studies, slated for the journal’s February 2021 issue.

Literature and Event: Reformulations of the Literary in the 21st Century
One-day Interdisciplinary Conference

What is an event? From a theoretical perspective, events are irregular occurrences, moments of great change or interruptions that can potentially alter the already existing course of history, politics and thought. These changes also simultaneously remould, or at least aim to, human perception and language, which makes them an indispensable part of literature and literary thinking. While literature has referred to these calamitous changes directly, by way of description or through diegetic context, on numerous occasions literature has, for various reasons, failed to come to terms with these events or has actively resisted or undercut them. The literary has also been defined, particularly after the post-structuralist interventions, as an event in its own right, with its own strategy and ambitions to affect change. At the same time this relationship has also been entirely dismissed in readings where literature has been thought of as registering the non-events or the micro-events (madeleine cakes for Proust) that would otherwise pass unnoticed in a political or a historical discourse. This conference is addressed to all such relations between literature and its events, but more eagerly to the event that literature itself becomes and the non-event that it said to sometimes emerge from.

En los últimos años se ha consolidado el incremento acelerado de la presencia global de expresiones diversas de las culturas populares japonesa y surcoreana contemporánea, pese al creciente interés por el aumento de la influencia de China como potencia dominante en Asia oriental. El interés por la literatura, los productos gráficos, la música pop, los videojuegos, la gastronomía y, sobre todo, las producciones audiovisuales procedentes de Japón y Corea del Sur, ha convertido así a estos dos países en auténticas superpotencias culturales que ocupan un lugar destacado en la fragmentada oferta del entretenimiento a escala mundial (Lie, 2014; Kuwahara, 2014; Otmazgin y Lyan, 2013).

Recent interventions into global film and processes of canonisation have worked to highlight the contributions of women in spaces and discourses previously dominated by men. Yet, despite these social and academic movements, women remain under-represented across vital areas of film culture as recent discussions of the 2019 Oscars and the 2018 Cannes Film Festival have shown. This event aims to highlight the increasing English-language research of contributions by self-identifying women in East Asian cinema and to interrogate questions of representation, labour, and production contexts. For English speaking fans, academics and researchers based outside of East Asia, this work is all the more important as a counter to the limiting and selective problems of international film festivals and regional distribution.
