A medida que crece el papel político, cultural y económico de Corea del sur en el mundo globalizado, el interés que despierta en el extranjero aumenta día a día. La demanda de profundizar sobre los estudios coreanos -y en especial en su idioma- ha aumentado significativamente entre los extranjeros en muchos países, incluido España.

Este interés sobre la República de Corea se ha extendido también a otros ámbitos culturales de este país aparte del idioma, como las series coreanas, su cine, su gastronomía, o incluso su cosmética, así como el K-pop: todo este interés sobre Corea del sur se denomina hallyu (ola coreana).

Aprender coreano no es sólo aprender un idioma. Los tres países más representativos de Asia Oriental -Corea, China y Japón- comparten gran parte de su historia y cultura a pesar de tener distintos idiomas. Aprender coreano proporciona otro marco para comprender la gran comunidad cultural de Asia y puede ser la puerta de entrada a otros aspectos de su cultura.

La profesora Eun Jin Moon es doctorando en Lingüística y lenguas aplicadas en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Inició sus estudios como licenciada en Educación de la lengua coreana y posteriormente obtuvo el título de Máster en Estudios sobre Corea en la Hankuk University of foreign studies. Y también está acredicata como Profesora de Lengua Coreana por el Ministerio de Cultura, Deporte y Turismo de la República de Corea. Imparte clases de lengua coreana en varias instituciones, como el Colegio Coreano de Madrid o la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Terrassa y fue examinadora de concurso oratorio de Centro Cultural Coreano en España.

2023 LTI Korea Translation Award for Aspiring Translators seeks to discover a new talent in Korean literary/cultural contents translation who will serve as a bridge between Korean and global literatures.

Eligibility

  • Literature
    • Applications are welcome from translators of all nationalities who have not yet received an official translation grant or published a translated work of Korean literature in their target language. (Applicants whose previous translations only appeared in LTI Korea Translation Academy and/or Translation Atelier collections are eligible for a literary translation category.)
  • Webtoon
    • Applications are welcome from translators of all nationalities who have not had more than one webtoon/webcomic translation published in either print or an online platform.
  • Film
    • Applications are welcome from translators of all nationalities who have not had more than one subtitle translation of a media content (films, TV dramas) released in theatres, film festivals, or through OTT services such as Netflix, Watcha, YouTube Originals, etc.
  • To be considered:
    • Co-translations are not accepted
    • Multiple applications are not allowed, and will be disqualified immediately. You can only apply for one language in one of the genres.
    • It is impossible for a previous winner to re-win the same genre.
    • Co-translation is not possible in all categories, and if plagiarism is confirmed, the award can be cancelled.

International Conference



This joint international conference brings together the 21st annual conference of the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE2023) and the 7th Conference of the Asia-Pacific LSP & Professional Communication Association (LSPPC7). Both associations promote the use of languages for specific purposes and professional communication. The main goal of this joint conference is to create a meeting point for scholars (researchers and practitioners) and allow them to discuss and exchange their views on the conference theme with participants from different world regions and do so from multi- and inter-disciplinary perspectives.

In a networked era, we are witnessing rapidly changing, web-mediated communication practices involving a variety of communicative purposes, audiences, modes and media. Emerging trends in disciplinary knowledge communication such as the Open Science paradigm attest to this fact. Academic and professional communication today thus poses important theoretical, methodological and pedagogical challenges that need addressing. Some of the questions that we aim to address are: What is the role of LSP teaching and research in an increasingly interconnected world? What methods and frameworks are suitable to investigate multilingual and multimodal communication online? How can practitioners support emerging digital communication needs in the professions? How can they best prepare future graduates and professionals to disseminate their work in digital environments?, and how can LSP research and practice help them develop the necessary literacies (academic, plurilingual and digital literacies)?


Strands of research

We welcome submissions on all aspects of LSP communication in relation to the AELFE thematic panels, but contributions addressing the specific theme of the conference are particularly encouraged.

Specifically, we invite proposals in broader areas such as discourse and communication, genre analysis, genres and registers, genres and multimodality, translation studies, multilingualism, languaging and translanguaging, cross-cultural and intercultural discourses, academic literacy development, acquisition of professional competence in the workplace, digital literacies, technologies for education, quality assurance in LSP teaching/learning, pedagogies for professional development and LSP teacher professional development.

Other topics in LSP and Professional Communication are also welcome.


Submission of abstracts

All abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the scientific committee, and proposals related to the AELFE panels will be evaluated by the panel coordinators. This will be followed by a notification of acceptance or request for revision.

The required format for submissions is an abstract of 300 words (excluding references), preferably in Word format. For references please follow the APA Citation Style (7TH edition). Abstracts should include a brief outline of the research/project context and clearly indicate the objectives, method(s) and results. They should be written in the language in which the presentation will be delivered.

  • Language policy: the conference languages are English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
  • Presentation Policy: given that the organising committee believes that conferences should provide opportunities for professional exchange, i.e., giving and receiving feedback, and meeting colleagues with similar interests, we encourage discussions following each paper presentation and also require that papers should be presented only by their authors. Non-author substitute presenters will not be allowed to present papers.
To aim at diversity, we accept only one paper presentation per author.

Multiculturalism, Literature and Translation in East Asia

This volume invites papers exploring a broad spectrum of theoretical, methodological and empirical questions about multilingualism, literary translation and meaning making in East Asia. As claimed by Martin Maiden, Chiara Cappellaro and Aditi Lahiri (2020: 69), “we are more multilingual than we think”. Katrin Kohl and Wen-chin Ouyang (2020) also assert that all human beings are in some way multilingual, and we should see multilingualism as the norm in social interactions. Defined in contrast to “monolingualism”, multilingualism usually refers to the acquisition and use of languages at a high level of fluency, though it is sometimes used flexibly with the term “plurilingual”, which puts less emphasis on the level of fluency attained (Kohl and Ouyang 2020: 4). If we define “languages” more broadly – to include registers, dialects, accents and ways of speaking – we find that multilingualism is normal in our daily lives, and switching between “languages” is an ability built into human’s DNA (ibid.:5). We should, therefore, respect multilingualism and promote language diversity in our societies. Yet, translators, as bi/multilingual authors and communicators, often give credence to the traditional monolingual premise and believe that “the meaning” of a source/original text can be carried across into a new target language. As Matthew Reynolds et al. (2020) argued, new meanings and new words will always be devised creatively during the process of translation, and therefore, considering translation as prism allows us to see the divergences and alternative standards of languages. For Ouyang (2020: 110-113), multiculturalism allows languages to interact with each other, and through the translation of “language-in-dialogue”, new worldviews, motifs, cultures, languages and literatures can thus travel around the world.

In East Asia, especially in the Chinese scriptworld, the relationship between written form and oral language differs from those in countries that use phonograms. The definition of multilingualism can be different from that in the European countries. This volume invites submissions that explore bi/multilingual models of literary translation in different linguistic strand settings in East Asia. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Multilingualism and world literature
  • Multilingualism and postcolonial/diasporic literature
  • Bi/multilingualism and translation
  • Translation and world literature
  • Multilingualism and the minority
  • Translating dialects and/or non-standard languages
  • Translatability and untranslatability

Submission of abstracts:

Please sent an abstract of 500 words along with a 50-word biographic note to editor Tzu-yu Lin (tzu-yu.lin@ucl.ac.uk) by 15 January 2022. Authors will be notified whether their abstracts have been accepted by 31 March 2022, and full manuscripts will be due by 31 October 2022. Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words long, including notes and bibliography. The volume is expected to be published in August 2023. See below for full timeline.

The aims of the Handbook are to showcase new research on translation in East Asia, underscoring its diversity and relevance to established and emerging fields. It aims to address interactions that have been less explored in English, such as intra-East Asian translation encounters, translation of minority languages, and translation between East Asian and non-European languages.

The volume will consist of five main sections. Section I, Specialised Translation and Interpreting, will broadly cover professional translation, including scientific, technical, medical and legal translation. Section II, Towards Equality, Inclusivity and Plurality, will spotlight research on activist translation, and minority and community languages. Section III, Popular Culture, Media and Soft Power, will address the role of translation in popular culture and its role in propagating soft power. Section IV, Translation History, will focus on translation and interpreting history. Section V, Translation of East Asian Scholarship, is devoted to English translations of translation studies scholarship originally written in East Asian languages, which are often less known to wider international audiences.

We welcome contributions by those working both in and outside of translation studies, and target a similarly diverse readership. We envisage that this Handbook will be appealing and accessible to those who might be specialists in one area of East Asia but would like to broaden their knowledge of work produced in the wider East Asian region. We also envisage that the readership will include non-specialists in East Asian translation, who may wish to draw on case studies in this field for their research and teaching.

We invite submissions that primarily, although not exclusively, address the following themes:
  • Multilingualism and translation of minority languages
  • Diasporic translation and community translation
  • Translation and LGBTQ activism
  • Translation and soft power
  • Professional practice in the translation/interpreting industry

If you would like to submit or suggest a work to appear in Section V (Translation of East Asian Scholarship), your abstract should also include a short statement (approx. 200 words) stating the significance and originality of the contribution.

We welcome two single-spaced pages of abstracts in linguistics and associated fields covering any topic and in any approach, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, historical-comparative linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse & grammaticalisation, first & second Language Acquisition, and language education. Abstracts must be anonymous and must present original research that has not been published anywhere before. Curso introductorio:

Idioma: inglés, francés, alemán, español, ruso, chino, japonés.

Duración: septiembre 2021 - junio 2023 (2 años, 4 semestres)

Curriculum:

  • Traducción práctica, estilo en la traducción (para cada idioma)
  • Conferencias sobre la literatura y la cultura coreanas (curriculum común)
  • Varios eventos que incluyan un taller de traducción con un autor y excursiones literarias.

Calendario de cursos:

  • 3-5 clases por semana, impartidas durante el día (9:00 - 18:00).

    JK29: The 29th Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference

    Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, October 9-11, 2021



    The 29th Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference (JK29), jointly hosted by Nagoya University and the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL), will take place at Nagoya University, Japan, from 9 to 11 October 2021, with satellite events on 8 October. It should be noted that JK 29 may be held as a virtual conference amid a pandemic. We are planning to make a decision on whether JK29 will be a physical or virtual conference by the end of June at the latest.

    The JK29 organizing committee welcomes abstract submissions for 20-minute oral presentations, followed by 10 minutes for discussion, and for poster presentations.

    Contributions to any aspect of Japanese/Korean linguistics, or comparison of these languages with other languages, are welcome. Comparative studies of Japanese and Korean are especially encouraged.

    • Abstracts must be anonymous and must present original research that has not been published.

    La Consejería de Educación de España en China, en colaboración con el Aula Cervantes en Seúl, organiza este seminario gracias a la participación de dos expertos de máximo nivel en la educación de contenidos transmedia, la profesora Marcela Fritler y el Dr. Carlos Scolari, y a la asistencia técnica Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y su incubadora Xiji.

    Introducción a los proyectos transmedia en la clase de ELE de Corea del Sur es una propuesta didáctica dirigida especialmente para todo el profesorado de español como lengua extranjera que trabaja en la región o tiene contacto habitual con este tipo de alumnado. La propuesta persigue describir la experiencia de crear proyectos de narrativa transmedia en la clase de ELE con el objetivo de desarrollar las competencias sociolingüísticas mediante el ecosistema de comunicación que las tecnologías generan.

    The CALA 2021 (SCOPUS / ISI indexed) is the annual conference and workshops and lectures on the Linguistic Anthropology, The Sociolinguistics, and the Language and Society, of Asia.
    • Theme:
      • Symbol and New Society: The CALA 2021 invites work on the linguistic symbols of Asian and global Asian society, in a new era. Submissions should acknowledge and describe the transfer of language and communication in this new era. Papers should focus on the ways in which communication has increasingly taken on both evolutionary and revolutionary form, following recent large-scale changes in Asian society, and in Asia’s new or revised interrelatedness with global scapes.
