CFP: "SUSTAINABILY AND RESILIENCE IN EAST ASIA" SYMPOSIUM, UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA


“Sustainability and Resilience in East Asia” symposium,

University of Arizona


The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) at the University of Arizona is pleased to announce that the symposium “Sustainability and Resilience in East Asia” will be held in October 2023.

This biannual one-day hybrid symposium is open to both the local public and to virtual audiences online. We invite scholars and graduate students from any field to discuss the past and future of environmental awareness and challenges with East Asia as the context. In addition to what is conventionally considered East Asia, we will also consider proposals that focus on Vietnam and the Himalayan region.

The following topics are some examples, but we welcome presentations that examine all issues related to the scientific, social, and cultural dimensions of the environment and sustainability in East Asia.
  • Changes in East Asia’s environments from multiple perspectives (geosciences, culture, history, religion, etc.)
  • East Asia's climate challenges and solutions in the past, present, and future (arid regions, water and natural disasters and their management, pollution, and green initiatives, etc.)
  • Cultural construction, negotiation, and representations of environmental sustainability and resilience in East Asia (e.g., literature, TV and films, music, anime/gaming culture, theater and performance, digital media, etc.)
  • New and interdisciplinary approaches to the study and understanding of environments in the East Asian context (new meanings of environmental studies, transnationality, ecocriticism, shifting boundaries of the field, posthumanism, etc.)

SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL MUJERES, IGUALDAD Y ESCLAVITUD EN COREA, UNIVERSIDAD DE MÁLAGA




Simposio Internacional «Mujeres, igualdad y esclavitud en Corea»,



El Área de Estudios de Asia Oriental-Departamento de Ciencias Históricas de la UMA organiza el Simposio Internacional «Mujeres, igualdad y esclavitud en Corea» los próximos días 22 y 23 de marzo, a celebrar en la Sala de Juntas «Manuel Rodríguez de Berlanga» de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras y en el hall de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación.

Este Simposio contará con seis conferencias sobre género y esclavitud en Corea impartidas por expertos en dichas materias, procedentes de Corea del Sur de Incheon National University, Sogang University y la Academy of Korean Studies, así como de la propia la Universidad de Málaga.

Además en el marco del evento, el día 22 de marzo tendrá lugar la inauguración de la exposición de pósteres científicos de la «Red Temática de Mujeres de Asia Oriental: Corea, China y Japón» en el Hall de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación, en la que participan profesores expertos en la materia de diferentes universidades públicas de España. La inauguración se acompañará de la representación “Sopa de mujer” de la compañía Mu Teatro a las 13.00h. El Simposio finalizará el día 23 de marzo a las 13.30h con una representación de «Juegos» por parte de los estudiantes del Grado en Estudios de Asia Oriental bajo la dirección de la prof. Eun Kyung Kang en los exteriores de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras.

Esta actividad se ha organizado en el marco de los «Path to equality: Korean Studies Network on inclusiveness» del Ministerio de Educación de Corea (AKS-2021-INC-2250002) y «ASIA-SLAVES El camino hacia la libertad en el periodo Joseon en Corea: Esclavitud y abolicionismo en el contexto de Asia Oriental» del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España (PID2020-116910GB-I00) y cuenta con financiación del I Plan Propio de Investigación Transferencia y Divulgación.

2021 JANGSEOGAK HANMUN WORKSHOP. ACADEMY OF KOREAN STUDIES

2021 Jangseogak Hanmun Workshop


  
The Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies is pleased to invite participants for the 2021 Jangseogak Hanmun Workshop.

The Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies hosted the Jangseogak Hanmun Workshop since 2016 for graduate students or advanced degree holders of Korean Studies and/or East Asian Studies who must have studied at least one year of classical Chinese or a completed comparable course in Asian Studies. The workshop offered 2 courses depending on their levels, for three-weeks intensive on-campus language course in July to deepen their understanding of Korean Hanmun.

Unfortunately, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies decided to offer online classes which helps to improve participants’ knowledge of archives (Korean classic documents) for applicants only. The workshop aims at creating a global knowledge-building community of Korean studies.

    Simposio Internacional de Investigación Joven en Traducción, Interpretación, 
    Estudios Interculturales y Estudios de Asia Oriental


    El próximo 3 de julio de 2020 se celebrará el Simposio Internacional de Investigación Joven en Traducción, Interpretación, Estudios Interculturales y Estudios de Asia Oriental, en la Facultad de Traducción e Interpretación de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

    Este simposio va dirigida a estudiantes de máster, doctorandos y jóvenes doctores que estén iniciando su carrera como investigadores. El objetivo básico del simposio es ofrecerles un espacio para el intercambio de ideas, un foro de encuentro donde presentar la investigación que están llevando a cabo en el ámbito de la traducción, la interpretación, los estudios interculturales o los estudios de Asia Oriental.

    Symposium After Hope: Future Forms and Alternative Methods,

    After Hope seeks to engage critical explorations of hope as an aesthetic and embodied experience. The prompt to think “after” hope is intended as a way to consider hope’s complex relationship to the future and the past. Through presentations and workshops focused on cultural, material, and technological expressions of hope, this interdisciplinary symposium aims to explore hope as a dynamic index of change. To do so, it asks what it means to go after hope and what comes after hope.

    Hope is an important historical, cultural, and social marker. Its significance for social action, however, is hotly debated. Often associated with general naiveté, or unrealizable utopian thought, hope can also be understood as a critical lens for understanding collective values and approaches to many of today's most pressing issues. It functions as an emotional register that underwrites, connects, divides and in other ways animates relationships between different communities, driving active processes of imagining, representing, and creating the conditions for desirable and eclectic futures. Through a discussion of hope in art, activism, and global alliances, we seek to understand expressions of optimism, pessimism, fear, and anticipation as part of cultural, material, and technological practices.
