CFP: PALGRAVE MACMILLAN BOOK SERIES ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN ASIA

New Book Series:

Human Rights in Asia from Palgrave Macmillan

ABOUT THE SERIES

This Palgrave Macmillan book series addresses the rising interest in human rights topics in Asia. It focuses on the largely underexplored territory of Asian human rights topics highlighting its empirical manifestations, historical trajectory and theoretical implications. It also goes beyond the problematic dichotomy between "East" and "West" by engaging in rigorous case-specific as well as cross-regional comparisons within South-South context. China's rise in world politics and its emergence as a massive donor, for example, has significant yet troubling implications. The member countries of ASEAN and Northeast Asia, on the other hand, would have different preoccupations and priorities calling for context-sensitive diagnosis and prognosis to promote human right causes. The series is multidisciplinary in nature and open to submissions focusing on international organization, ethics, criminology, development, freedom of expression, labour rights, environment, human/sex trafficking, democratization, governance studies, disability, reproductive rights, LGBT, post-/colonial as well as post-/authoritarian critiques and social movement, among others. The series publishes full-length monographs, and edited volumes.

CFP: UNITED NATIONS AND KOREAN WAR (1950-1953): POLITICS, WAR AND PEACE.

United Nations and Korean War (1950-1953):

Politics, War and Peace

After World War II, the geopolitical tension of East Asia, especially the Korean peninsula became critical. The beginning of the Cold War between two different ideologies of Communism and Democracy was eventually visualised through the military conflict of the Korean War (1950-1953). The United Nations (UN) dispatched soldiers from sixteen countries as well as medical support from six nations. Then, what is the relationship between the United Nations and the Korean War? Which countries were involved in the war? What were the political and international issues? How was the war seen to outsiders? What kind of grassroots narratives did the soldiers, families and Koreans have?

The aim of this conference is to explore the involvement of the United Nations for ‘the Forgotten War’ through the various case studies of individual, group, or nation. The theme can be analyzed in a multidisciplinary approach of history, politics, anthropology, sociology, war strategy, human movement, medicine, refugee, POWs, Busan studies, unification policy, education, and human rights. If you are interested or your current research is on the subject or relevant to the Korean War, we invite your paper for the international conference in 2021.

Proposed streams:
  1. Policy of the UN for Korean War: The involvement of the United Nations (UN) to the Korean War was significant for South Korea (positively) and North Korea (negatively). How was the decision made so early? Who was involved in the process? How was the policy implemented internationally?
  2. Human Movements, POWs and Refugees: The war directly impacted the relocation of the local people (6.3 million). The war also caused many POWs and refugees. How was the geographical landscape of the human movements? What was the situation of refugees? Were the POWs treated fairly?
  3. War Strategy and Battles: The various war strategies were applied at the battlers of the Korean War between the army, navy (the marine corps) and air force of China, Russia, UN, North and South Koreas. How was the strategy changed? What was the turning point for each other? Which battles were significant? What about the condition of retrogression?
  4. Narratives of Victims and Casualties (Soldiers and families): The war generated many victims (death and wound) which affected the emotional and mental condition of family members. What was the story of individual involvement? How do they remember the East Asian war? What is the post-war life of soldiers? Do they have any story in relation to Korean people?
  5. Human Rights and Welfare (medicine, orphans, and education): Under the military situation of the Korean war, there were various activities of international, public and NGO organisations in the sphere of human rights. How was the medical service provided? How were orphans managed? Was any activity of education continued?
  6. Theory and Method in Unification and Peace Process: Since the Korean War has been 70 years and remained as an unfinished war, what kind of theory or method can be adopted for the development of Korean Unification? How can the peace process take a place for the future of both Koreas?

CFP: "MEDIA FREEDOM IN ASIA: CHALLENGES FROM BELOW", SPECIAL ISSUE, ASIAN JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION

Call for papers

"Media Freedom in Asia: challenges from below"

Special issue, Asian Journal of Communication

Advancing media freedom has been one of the megatrends in Asian communication over the past 30-40 years. Media space has been opened up by political revolutions and reform movements, television deregulation, the rollout of the internet, and demands for more choice and voice by hundreds of millions of better educated and more economically empowered citizens.

Over the past decade, however, this trend has slowed, stalled, or even reversed in several Asian societies. This is in line with a global pattern of “democratic recession” and “authoritarian resilience” observed by many analysts. The most obvious cause is the emergence of authoritarian leaders. However, top-down explanations do not capture fully the current dynamics. One striking feature of the state of media freedom in many Asian societies is the ambiguous role of the publics that are ostensibly the main beneficiaries of the right to freedom of expression.

In some settings, popular responses to state interventions range from indifference and apathy to active, partisan support for authoritarian leaders’ attacks on media. In other cases, the attacks come directly from popular movements. Religious and other identity-based groups may even be the main drivers of censorship and self-censorship, in societies where government control is less of an issue. Sometimes, in the absence of well-functioning independent media accountability systems, the public’s legitimate ethical concerns can result in interventions that obstruct the media.

We invite papers that expand our theoretical and empirical understanding of Asian media freedom’s “challenges from below”. The guest editors’ working definition of “media” covers traditional mass media, online media, and internet intermediaries and platforms. We will focus on media that already or potentially contribute to public discourse and political culture, especially news media but also entertainment formats. In line with the Asian Journal of Communication’s scope, papers must be grounded in one or more Asian jurisdictions, and can address the topic from any appropriate disciplinary tradition and methodological approach, including historical, legal and comparative methods.

Submissions are invited on questions such as:

  • How and why has support for media freedom changed over time in selected Asian countries?
  • How have the rhetorical strategies of populist leaders in Asia sought to delegitimise independent media?
  • How do decentralised attacks on media, such as through cyber troops and vigilante violence, operate in Asia and what are their effects?
  • How do publics in Asia understand media freedom, for what historical or cultural reasons, and to what extent are their framings compatible with the idea of freedom of expression as a universal human right?
  • Based on trends in Asia, how can we better conceptualise media and their publics?
  • What makes “free” Asian countries stand out and how in the mostly partly free or not free Asia?

Full papers are due by 11 January 2021.

CFP: CONFLICT AND THE SENSES IN THE GLOBAL COLD WAR: FROM PROPAGANDA TO SENSORY WARFARE

Conflict and the Senses in the Global Cold War: From Propaganda to Sensory Warfare

October 15-16, 2020. Berlin, Germany

Although a conflict in which military strategies and weapons of mass destruction were always on the “horizon of expectation”, the Cold War was to a large degree carried out by non-lethal methods. It was also a war of culture, politics, and (visual and sonic) propaganda. Therefore, it can be understood to a great extent as a war not only on the senses, but as a war through the senses. In recent times, sensory aspects of domestic and international conflicts have become a field of interest in both sensory studies and conflict studies, with their methods and questionnaires intertwining in fruitful cooperation. (1) Historiographical approaches include the study of conflicts from the American Civil War to the Russian Revolution to both World Wars, and these examine how wars as the most extreme form of conflict were perceived—and how war changed contemporary perception. (2) The central conflict of the second half of the 20th century, though, is still a blatantly unexplored area in terms of sensory approaches. (3)
